Recent family events has inspired Megan to do a little searching online regarding parenting and, to her delight, stumbled on an insightful article written on Facebook as “note” by Ed Brooks.
Unfortunately, you must be a Facebook member to view the article, so this link won’t do you any good unless you are currently or are planning on becoming a Facebook member.
Megan, however, has posted the full article (with proper credit), Parental Tyranny: A Mark of Immaturity, on her blog which is available to everyone.
The article is titled “Parental Tyranny: A Mark of Immaturity“. In short, Mr. Brooks speaks of his Baptist influenced childhood and the ‘rule of law’ set forth by his parents, which was the Bible, and when and why one might want to address tyrannical parenting (but still keeping God’s command to honor your parents).
Aside from a few “soap-box” moments, the article is indeed insightful and well written. Megan and I will be sure to keep Mr. Ed Brooks and others in similar circumstances in our prayers.
With that, however, It would be foolish to only ask God for deliverance of others under tyrannical parenting. We must also ask God to shower us with His grace and wisdom so that we ourselves do not parent with the same blind ignorance.
I pray daily for God to remind me to always self-examine, even when I’m sure of what I’m doing or saying; to guide me in the use of my emotions (they are deceitful, irrational, quick, and a real bother sometimes!) especially in parenting, and to bring Megan and I to an enlightened view… a heavenly view.
I’m sure that most patents with the tyrannical philosophies are good-willed with good intentions, just like Megan and I do with our children. It’s a difficult challenge to balance ourselves and the authority we have over our children.
There is much more to say, but I’ll leave you to ponder what Ed has already said for now.
